Title of Program

Computational Astrophysics

Hometown

Johnson City, TN

Description of Program

Computational astrophysics is an area of physics which uses computer science and analytical methods to study the physics behind objects and phenomena in space. My program combines computer science, math, physics, and astronomy to equip me with all the knowledge I will need to research this topic. It dives deeper than just a physics degree by adding more methods and tools in computer science and math than you would otherwise study. Using advanced math such as numerical analysis, program writing and optimization, and a knowledge of the theories behind physics, I will be able to apply these methods and information to things like galaxies, stars, supernovae and more to better understand the physics behind how they function. Having a flexible program such as this one will allow me to cater my curriculum as I learn about my field and gain experience to ensure I am learning everything I will need to know.

Departmental Emphases

Physics, Math, Computer Science, Astronomy

Anticipated Graduation Date

May 2029

Plans After Graduation

After I graduate, I plan to go to graduate school to pursue a doctorate in astrophysics or computational astrophysics, depending on what programs I can find and what schools I can attend. After that, I would love to stay in academia or possibly work for a national lab, but either way I want to do research!

Other Academic Interests

I enjoy history, art, and learning about languages and culture. I especially love science history!

Prior Enrollment at Other Colleges or Universities

Dual Enrollment at East Tennessee State University 2024-2025

Study Abroad

I am eagerly looking for opportunities to study abroad and would like to by the summer of my sophomore or junior year.

Part-time Employment; Hobbies; Campus Clubs/Activities

I am a Produce Clerk at Publix and work with Dr. Cheney in the physics department setting up undergraduate labs. I am also a member of the Society of Physics Students and Gender Minorities and Women in Physics, and outside of school I enjoy baking, cooking, and outdoor activities!
