Title of Program: Women in Art with an Emphasis on the United States

E-mail Address: tlloyd6@vols.utk.edu

Hometown: Memphis, TN

Year: Junior

Anticipated Graduation Date: May 2022

Description of Program: My program studies the oppression and miss-representation, as well as the sociological and physiological micro-aggressions, of women throughout the history of the United States and how our accurate and equal representation in art is important in today’s society. I am a painter and am also interested in curating galleries and museums in the future and my work revolves around the representation of women and how to talk about topics such as sexuality, mental health, body positivity, oppression, and more through works of art. I have designed my program to give me a broad swath of knowledge in order to accurately represent women in my pieces as well as in exhibits that I hope to curate.

Departmental Emphases: Art Two-Dimensional Arts, Art, Art History, Women, Gender, & Sexuality, Sociology, Psychology, African Studies, History, and Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism

Faculty Mentor: Joshua Bienko

Plans after graduation (career, graduate/professional school, etc.): After graduation, I intend to continue my studies in painting and art history in graduate school, and potentially work towards a PHD. I hope to work for a museum or gallery one day and curate exhibits that are centered around the representation of women as well as continuing to create my own body of work on the same topic.

Other Academic Interests: French and Francophone Studies

Study Abroad: I studied abroad in Paris, France through the IES Paris Studio Art program during the beginning half of the Spring 2020 semester and was pulled out due to COVID-19. In Paris, I was studying art history, feminism, immigration, as well as painting and drawing, completely in French. A major draw for me to this program was to be fully immersed in the language and culture of France, while studying topics that I felt were relevant to my art and my continued studies.

Part-time employment; Hobbies; Campus Clubs/Activities: I work part-time at Painting with a Twist as a painting instructor. I am a part of Campus Events Board Arts & Culture Committee, and during the 2020-2021 school year, I will be the Marketing Chair for A&C. I am also part of the Chancellor’s Honors Program. Outside of my artistic endeavors, I love the outdoors and plan on hiking the Appalachian Trail once I graduate from UTK. I love travelling, cooking, reading and of course above all, painting.
