Title of Program: Literary Journalism

E-mail Address: abutle33@vols.utk.edu

Hometown: Nashville, TN

Year: Sophomore

Anticipated Graduation Date: May 2022

Description of Program: Literary journalism utilizes the devices and techniques associated with creative writing while upholding a real-world narrative, resulting in works that are both strong and genuine. My program consists of a blend between journalism and English, emphasizing the responsibility in telling someone else’s story, not a fictionalized or sanitized version of it. Literary journalism takes off the distant voice that is often present in nonfiction works as well as the arbitrariness associated with creative writing in order to enhance writing in a way that is simultaneously articulate and enjoyable as a reader.

Departmental Emphases: English, Journalism, Communication Studies, Political Science, Sociology

Faculty Mentor: Margaret Lazarus Dean, Department of English

Plans after graduation (career, graduate/professional school, etc.): I plan to get a job either writing for a media outlet or in public relations. In the latter route, I would seek a position in public relations and media consulting in politics, whether that is for a specific campaign, office, or non-profit organization. I would be happy in either path, though I would prefer to work in a digital media and entertainment company, specifically focused through the lens of female-driven content surrounding current events or political happenings.
