Public and Community Art, with a focus on underrepresented communities
Hometown
Description of Program
My program aims to examine the modes through which oppressed people–especially women and queer people–have experienced misrepresentation in art institutions and practices. I fundamentally believe that art should be at the center of every community and educational space, so my research and art curation is geared towards the representation, accessibility, inclusivity, and justice for minorities and marginalized folks. I seek to learn how museums and public art spaces can function as community centers, public services, and as third spaces. I also critically examine the definition and confines of “diversity” in contemporary art and education spaces: is increasing representation enough? How can we uplift marginalized artists by correcting false narratives, filling holes in the archive, and including comprehensive and all encompassing lessons in all levels of education? These are all questions that I intend to research within my undergraduate experience.
